Whiston Society (Science)

The information here may be outdated so please contact mrpg2 [at] cam [dot] ac [dot] uk for more up to date details/contact address of the president.

The Whiston Society is Clare College’s natural science society. We aim to provide for both physical and biological natural sciences students.  We are a student run society with a committee of Clare students, open to all students, irrespective of subject or college We host multiple talks on a range of topics from across science, and hold collaboration talks with other societies and panel discussions involving eminent scientists from around the country, and from Cambridge itself. These typically take place on a weekday in the evening, and are followed by drinks and the chance to talk to the speaker and other students. These talks are informal and are a great way to hear about developments in the scientific world. We also arrange formals at Clare, involving a welcome formal in Michaelmas each year, along with a few formal swaps with other university science societies. Most notably, we hold an annual dinner, inviting leading Clare alumni such as Sir David Attenborough to speak after the meal. These events are primarily for Clare College students and fellows, although through the formals throughout the year there is the opportunity to interact with students from many other colleges’ science societies. We advertise all our events via social media, including facebook and twitter, and via our mailing list, which can be signed up for here: https://lists.cam.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/soc-whiston-society
